Deux Amis
About This Spot
Nestled on a quiet stretch of East 51st Street, Deux Amis unfolds like a heartfelt conversation between old friends. This tucked-away French bistro has the easy, unhurried rhythm of a cherished neighborhood spot—where familiar faces blend with newcomers, and the art on the walls whispers stories of Parisian corners. The space invites you to linger, whether nestled into a cozy corner booth or perched at the bar, absorbing soft murmurs and the clink of glasses over warm lighting.
Here, the mood is both relaxed and quietly elegant, carrying that distinct charm of a place where care infuses every detail. Dinner feels like a thoughtful rendezvous: the richness of slow-simmered dishes, the subtle warmth of house-selected wines, and the gentle surprise of menu touches that give traditional recipes a tender, personal spin. It’s the kind of restaurant where the French onion soup, graced with unexpected notes of star anise or cinnamon, reveals itself as both comforting and fresh; where escargot and beef bourguignon arrive like familiar old friends, coaxing you into savoring each moment.
Deux Amis doesn’t rush its guests; instead, it offers a space to savor the nuances of French cuisine alongside the hum of genuine conversation and honest hospitality. Service here feels like a quiet dance—attentive, knowledgeable, and warm without overwhelming. Many return again and again, drawn not only by the food but by the feeling of belonging, the unmistakable pulse of a place that feels like home even when you’re far away.

Came here on a late weekend night as this place has been on our list for a while. It was almost full around 9pm, we got seated quickly but took a while for the server to bring the menu. We did get a corner section so felt comfy and admired the French paintings all over the wall while I waited to get served. I could tell some guests were regulars, felt like a perfect restaurant to experience delicious French food at a relaxing cozy French place. The grilled calamari was excellent and they kindly divided the dish into two plates. We ordered the burger and the roasted duck which was absolutely amazing. The staff made sure the sides (mashed potato and string beans) for the duck were portioned well and it didn’t disappoint. Not just the portion but the price points and quality was great. We topped it off with the raspberry Neapolitan and it was to die for. Light and not too sweet we couldn’t stopped scooping the sauce on the plate!

Wow. The French onion soup is different with the star anise and cinnamon but the difference is homey and gentle. Our server was incredible and highly recommended. I even had to ask for his name and it’s Janos. Please keep this man. He explained everything perfect and chose the perfect wines to pair. I loved the beef rib and escargot. Definitely a gem of NYC.

When I lived in the neighborhood, I was here at least once a week. Then I moved out of state... I finally got to visit the city recently, and Deux Amis was still a must-do after 3 years. In fact, during my 4-day trip I returned two days in a row! I can't say enough good things about the staff, atmosphere, and food. The escargot is outstanding. The mussels are equally amazing--the portion is pleasantly huge, and they offer several sauce/broth options (try the saffron cream!). It comes with delicious fries. Frankly though, the food has proven consistent, even over time, so I'm sure all of the other dishes I had in the past are just as wonderful now. It's truly a "home away from home." The menu remains the same, which is part of the comfort. Many of the patrons are regulars, but I still managed to meet lovely people who hadn't been there before. Bottom line: go there!

Nice local neighborhood French bistro. Loved the chocolate souffle. Other dishes were fine. House cab for $36/bottle only! Great value. Didn't get a chance to try their French Onion Soup as we might have missed it on the menu but later asked and was told they had it. Service was very good.

What a gem! There are literally 11 French restaurants in this neighborhood but Deux Amis rings all the right bells. Classic French atmosphere; mahogany bar, white table cloths, burgundy red accents. We sat at the bar (always my preference). We started with the Gazpacho and Vol Au Vent. The Vol Au Vent was crazy delicious. Perfect starter to split if you’re hungry (intensely satisfying flavors and buttery pie crust). The gazpacho was very basic tomato and very soupy smooth, but nonetheless uber refreshing and light. We were each served warm bread rolls with chilled salted butter with the appetizers. For entrees, we had the chicken and the burger. The chicken breast was crazy juicy and tender for a breast cut, and served with a altoiid box sized piece of potato gratin. The gratin was unbelievable. You could see the thyme leaves and taste the grounding comfort food vibes. We (as always) ordered the burger rare. It came with fries and salad. Holy smokes was it cooked perfectly. It’s the kind of thing you bite and start singing AND IIIIIIII WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOUU in your head. Zahir was a legend. He made us feel right at home. If you’re considering elsewhere, don’t.
